Ortem welcomes back Necrotype for release number 19 on the label.
Following on from his recent LP “Surrowey’ on Futurepastzine, Necrotype once again takes the envelope rips it into shreds, screws it up and burns it.
This 6 track EP borrows fragments from Necrotype’s previous releases but launches them squarely into an industrial, post punk new wave arena. I said it when he did the aforementioned LP, nobody is pushing the boundary in and around like Necrotype.
Inghts draws on big held synth bass notes, overlaid with a jagged synth, off beat drum machine beats and a robot string quartet. You could be in space, you could upside down or even have electric friends, the influences inside this first track are laid out far and wide.
Spiler is rolling drums and massive rumbling synth bass from the off. A chant like loop comes in and melds itself into the rhythm. Let it roll, heralds a step up and this tune rolls out in its own way. A synth breakdown brings a calm in amongst the rhythmic chaos, but only for a minute. Ominous string, beats and bass all continue to roll, roll, roll……..
Dreanor finds Necrotype in a more contemplative state with synths, a Reece like oscillating bass and jazz time signatures, that in turn have, of late, become Necrotype’s signature, drawing heavily on the more unused 7/8 beat, which is highly prevalent in this tune. The drums guide the listener through the tune and eventually lead to a natural crescendo.
Guartwish starts with a hiss from the recording process as do all the tracks on this release, which really add to the analogue warmth of the release and feel like they were recorded straight onto a tape cassette. It almost feels like a peak into the producers process where the hiss ties the whole project together. This tune has a beautiful open drum sound, again in that stutter step timing which informs everything around it, the way the synths and the bass travel, which make it all an alluring listening experience.
The title track itself feels like a lament when it starts off with its straight beat and steel guitar-esque riff, which is joined by a oscillating bass. The tune is then carried off into Necrotype territory before returning to its original lament, whilst alternating between both. This whole EP manages to evoke a range of emotion and feeling whilst juxtaposed with the unnerving and chaotic. Swinging from joyous to melancholic in a heartbeat.
Outrance shows us that this EP is more than just 6 tracks put together, it is one man truly expressing himself through his music. Outrance is distorted melancholy over electronic beats with those jazz steeped drum edits which just tumble through the track, under pinned by a constant guitar way in the back, but enough to be heard.
This is an EP which is both emotional and emotive and needs to be heard.
