Metro comes with the ‘Fifth Fundamental” for Ortem 017.

Transition X kicks off proceedings and feels very much like a field recording meshed with space age signals. It heralds the start of something and builds anticipation for whats to come and indeed is a ‘transition’ between what is now and what is to come and is a perfect opener.

The title track opens up with arpeggio synths held strings and gives way to distorted, wood block punctuated beats. It builds around repetition and recognition and opens up into fragments of triangle hits which pull you into its trance like patterns. The track pulls you in until it breaks down into a subtle version of itself before once again launching into a stripped back aural assault.

Isolated Embers reflects on past drums and the conversation they are engaged in with the surrounding melody. There is subtle call and response which is echoed on this track and throughout the course of the EP. A chopped Amen and tuned wooden blocks share the space and go back and forth as the melody breathes in and out.

Light Machine, time is running out, the final track lays way to all that has gone before and buzzes with electric and a lone games console playing out in the background. The beat loops around water, a falling bass and a signal that the robots have been released or the cyber attack is imminent. Its all under the radar but don’t ignore it, just because its not in your face, its doesn’t mean it won’t hurt you.
